Rediscovering the joy of charity shopping

When your #OOTD is Top to Toe Charity Chic V.2

Licourish dress

Easing of lockdown and reopening of essential shops in June meant some local charity shops are back in business. After three months of no clothes shopping or treasure hunting, I was delighted to discover Walnut Tree Community Shop open, even more delighted to score a brand new Liquorish dress for £8 only.

You may think charity shopping means trawling through rails and rails of pre-loved clothing that was once another woman’s pride and joy, but one can often find brand new items with tags – as was the case with this tropical print navy blue wrap dress with mustard details on the shoulders.

What I loved about this dress is the tropical birds and the way flora and fauna in coral and green complement each other.

Finally with an opportunity dress up – and still going nowhere but the garden – I decided to show off my glad rags, which turned out to be another opportunity to dress top to toe charity chic.

Most of the accessories are those you’ve seen before on this blog – I had opt for my go-to summer shoes which I got in 2018 at the Sue Ryder stall at Stratford-upon-Avon festival and the vintage shades I found on Portobello Road in 2017.

The only new accessory is the moss green David Jones bag I bought from a small concession in The Children’s Air Ambulance Charity Shop in Stow-on-the-Wold on a road trip in February last year.

Not shopping in the last three months has cemented my belief that, with so much waste in the world and modern day slavery going strong in parts of the world trying to supply the demand for clothes we only wear for a season or two, there really is no need to flock to the shops.

I was hoping we might all recalibrate our mindless shopping habits and priorities during this time but alas, seeing the queues in front of Primark and Nike the very morning the lockdown eased made me question this.

Regardless, I intend to carry on with my charity shopping and thrifty treasure hunting, turning other women’s trash into my treasured pieces.
