Outerwear has never looked so good. Winter is fast approaching, calling for more layers and bigger coats. We are lucky that 2016 runways had a range of options on offer: from voluminous puffa jackets to rich brocade to tactile pile, we are spoilt for choice.
Make it Roar
Animal print is still on-trend this autumn, from Prada to Givenchy, the runways were awash with big cat prints. And what easier way than getting feline with your outerwear and donning some spots for winter?
Pile on the Pile
Textured shag pile coats were big news on the Autumn/Winter 2016 runways, and it seems any colour goes from Gucci’s bubblegum pink to Burberry’s mossy green. Whatever colour you opt for, remember: the more tactile the pile, the better.
Blinging Brocade
Make an opulent statement with your outerwear by investing in a brocade coat. From rich embroidery of Dolce & Gabbana to the golden girls of Gucci, the runways glittered with brocade coats. With such powerful prints, it’s sensible to pare down the rest of your look.
Shearling Darling
Nothing says cosy like shearling, and whether you like your cropped or long, oversized or belted, there is a shearling for every girl out there as coat du jour makes a return to our wardrobes.
Caped Crusader
This timeless style keeps doing the rounds on the runways and makes a come back this season. Whether you want to keep in minimal in a single colour like Derek Lam’s winter white or Salvatore Ferragamo’s sizling scarlet, or go for a print option a la Missoni, a cape will lift your look up instantly.
Power Puff
The must-have outerwear item of the season comes in the shape of puffa jackets and coats. And this season size matters: the bigger the better. You can either go for shorter crops or go all out in a longer coat, or try top to toe puffa a la DKNY.
Get into the Gloss
50 shades of fetish is upon us with chic, high shine leather in colours from deep burgundy to slick black. Definitely a showstopper whether you make it a longer cut like Valentino or opt for a shorter crop.
Join the Troops
March to the beat of the military this winter as this trend is back in a big way – from navy overcoats to matching trousers, to khaki coats to ornate details. You can wear top to toe matching navy with military details and red trims or simply opt for a coat or blazer. If you really want to go bold, make it a red affair like Dolce & Gabbana.
